Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has said the Oyo State Government does not require the intervention of the United Nations (UN) to investigate the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state.
Adebayo made the remarks while reacting to calls from some quarters for international involvement in probing the circumstances surrounding the incident. He argued that Nigeria possesses the legal institutions, security agencies, and investigative capacity needed to uncover the facts and bring those responsible to justice.
According to him, the responsibility for investigating crimes committed within the country rests primarily with Nigerian authorities, stressing that state and federal institutions should be empowered to carry out their constitutional duties effectively.
He urged the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies to conduct a transparent, thorough, and credible investigation into the abduction, identify those behind the attack, and ensure they are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The school abduction, which attracted widespread public attention, sparked concerns over the safety of students and teachers, prompting renewed calls for stronger security around educational institutions. The victims have since regained their freedom, bringing relief to their families and the affected community.
Adebayo also called for greater investment in intelligence gathering, community policing, and school security to prevent similar incidents from recurring. He maintained that restoring public confidence requires swift action, accountability, and improved coordination among security agencies.
The incident has reignited national discussions on insecurity and the need for comprehensive measures to protect schools across Nigeria from criminal attacks. Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all those connected to the abduction will face the full weight of the law.
