Nigerian authorities have ramped up efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reporting the seizure of thousands of kilograms of illegal narcotics in a series of well-coordinated operations nationwide.

These operations, as outlined by the anti-narcotics agency, targeted drug trafficking networks in major cities, border areas, seaports, airports, and other strategic locations. Seized substances included significant amounts of cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, tramadol, and other banned drugs.

The NDLEA also announced the arrest of several suspected drug traffickers and indicated that investigations are ongoing to pinpoint and dismantle the criminal networks driving this illicit trade.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), reiterated the agency’s dedication to fighting drug trafficking and abuse, emphasizing that traffickers would continue to face strict legal consequences.

Marwa mentioned that the agency has enhanced its intelligence gathering and collaboration with local and international security bodies to effectively address the rising threat posed by organized drug trafficking syndicates.

He emphasized that illegal drugs significantly contribute to violent crime, insecurity, and public health issues, and assured that the agency would maintain vigorous enforcement actions across the country.

The NDLEA also called on the public to aid in combating drug trafficking by providing credible information that could lead to the capture of traffickers and the seizure of illegal drugs.

Security experts highlight that Nigeria’s strategic position in West Africa has made it a key transit point for international drug trafficking networks, prompting authorities to intensify border surveillance and conduct intelligence-driven operations.

The recent seizures underline the government’s commitment to disrupting the supply of illegal drugs, prosecuting offenders, and mitigating the social and economic impacts of drug abuse across the nation.
