For years, one question has remained important:

What happened to Nigeria’s industrial dreams?

The factory is located along the Gombe–Biu Road in Jauro Garga, Gombe State.

Today, the site is largely abandoned.

However, it was once part of a major agricultural project.

When Farming Supported Industry

Vedfru was more than a factory.

https://temu.to/k/erafbdh4bfz https://temu.to/k/erafbdh4bfz https://temu.to/k/erafbdh4bfz

It was part of an agricultural system that connected farmers, workers and industry.

Large-scale farming took place around the area.

Irrigation also made a difference.

It allowed farmers to grow tomatoes, fruits and vegetables beyond the normal farming season.

As a result, the factory had access to local farm produce.

From Farm to Factory

By the late 1960s and into the 1970s, tomato processing had taken root at Vedfru.

Farmers produced the crops.

The factory processed them.

Workers handled different stages of production.

The finished products then moved to the market.

This created a complete value chain.

What Did Vedfru Produce?

Vedfru became known for several food products.

They included:

  • Tomato paste
  • Ketchup
  • Vegetable sauces
  • Fruit juices

Historical accounts also describe the company as being involved in exporting Nigerian agricultural produce.

That meant local farming could serve markets beyond Gombe.

A Community Grew Around the Factory

Vedfru was not only about production.

A community also developed around the agricultural estate.

Former residents remember farms, workshops, roads and a country club.

People lived and worked there.

For many families, the factory was therefore part of everyday life.

Then Everything Changed

Today, much of that activity is gone.

The abandoned site raises important questions.

What happened to the factory?

What happened to the farms?

Where did the workers go?

And why did the industrial system disappear?

These questions are bigger than Vedfru.

They are also part of Nigeria’s wider industrial story.

Nigeria Has Done This Before

Nigeria is often described as a country trying to industrialise.

But Vedfru shows that the country has done some of this before.

Nigeria has grown crops on a large scale.

It has used irrigation for commercial farming.

It has processed agricultural products locally.

It has created industrial jobs.

It has also exported agricultural products.

So, the country is not starting from zero.

What Can We Learn?

The answer may not be to rebuild Vedfru exactly as it was.

Instead, its history can provide useful lessons.

What worked?

What failed?

What caused the decline?

And how can future agricultural industries avoid the same problems?

These questions matter today.

Nigeria has a large agricultural sector and a young population.

Connecting farms to factories could create jobs and increase local production.

A Story Worth Remembering

Vedfru may now be an abandoned industrial site.

But its history remains important.

It shows what can happen when farming and manufacturing work together.

It also reminds us that Nigeria once had agricultural industries capable of producing finished goods.

The real lesson is not simply about bringing back an old factory.

It is about understanding what was lost.

And, perhaps, what can be built again.
