Kenyan President William Ruto has described the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos as an example of what African governments, investors and financial institutions can achieve through collaboration.
Ruto made the remarks on Friday, September 25, after touring the massive refinery in the Lekki area of Lagos State at the invitation of Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote.
The Kenyan president said the Nigerian facility has a crude oil refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and produces more than 100 million litres of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel daily.
He also highlighted the refinery’s marine infrastructure, including about 120 kilometres of subsea facilities used to transport crude from ships to the plant.
“This huge achievement is a testament of what African governments, investors and financial institutions can do together,” Ruto said.
Ruto prepares for Kenya refinery project
Ruto’s visit came ahead of the planned groundbreaking of the Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, scheduled for September 30.
The Kenyan president said the planned refinery would strengthen fuel supply and security, support industrialisation and create about 60,000 jobs.
He also said the project could encourage the development of related industries, including fertilizer, chemicals and packaging.
Dangote refinery as regional industrial model
The Lagos refinery was inaugurated in 2023 after nearly a decade of construction and an investment reported at about $20 billion.
Ruto’s visit reflects the growing regional interest in large-scale refining and petrochemical projects as African countries seek to expand domestic processing capacity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
The planned Kenyan project is expected to become part of a broader industrial development strategy around Lamu.
