England head coach Thomas Tuchel wanted his team to embrace the chaos as they began rebuilding after the disappointment of their World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.

However, England’s latest meeting with Spain at Wembley provided a reminder that chaos must be matched with discipline, control and quality if a team wants to succeed at the highest level.

Spain demonstrated that balance perfectly.

The reigning world and European champions survived an entertaining contest to defeat England 3-2, extending their unbeaten run to 39 matches and once again exposing the fine margins separating the two sides.

England showed plenty of encouraging signs during the match, particularly when they abandoned attempts to imitate Spain’s possession-based approach and returned to a more direct style built around pace, physical strength and quick attacking transitions.

But the damage had already been done.

England punished by early mistake

England found themselves behind inside the opening two minutes after Marc Guehi made a costly error while attempting to play out from the back.

The defender’s turn into danger presented Lamine Yamal with an opportunity that the Spanish forward did not waste.

Spain continued to threaten and could easily have extended their advantage before the interval.

Ferran Torres had a goal disallowed for offside, while England goalkeeper James Trafford produced an excellent save to deny him.

Torres then missed another opportunity when he found himself through on goal but sent his effort wide.

Considering the number of chances Spain created, England were fortunate to reach the 36th minute only one goal behind.

England find their identity

There were, however, periods when England looked considerably more dangerous.

Once Tuchel’s players stopped trying to replicate Spain’s passing patterns and began relying on their own strengths, the hosts became more aggressive.

Their pace in attack caused Spain problems, while their physicality and willingness to attack space created opportunities.

That period offered encouragement to Tuchel because it suggested England have their own identity and do not necessarily need to beat Spain at Spain’s preferred game.

The problem was consistency.

Spain’s ability to control possession, manage difficult moments and make the right decisions under pressure ultimately proved decisive.

Control remains essential

Tuchel’s call for England to embrace chaos may have merit when it comes to attacking football, but the match showed that successful teams also need structure.

At international level, small mistakes can have enormous consequences.

England produced moments capable of exciting their supporters, but Spain once again demonstrated why they remain one of the strongest teams in world football.

For England, the challenge is now to combine Tuchel’s desire for freedom and aggression with the control and discipline required to win major tournaments.

The defeat will be disappointing, but it also provides England with another indication of what they must improve if they are to turn promising performances into trophies.
