Former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has been transferred to a military-run hospital in the Khartoum area for medical treatment following health complications, his lawyer said.

Bashir, 82, was moved from northern Sudan back to the capital for medical tests and treatment. His lawyer, Mohamed Alhassan Alameen, said the former president has symptoms requiring further diagnosis and treatment that may not be available in Sudan.

Bashir’s family has separately appealed for him to be allowed to travel abroad for specialised medical care.

In a statement, the family said the need for treatment outside Sudan had become urgent. It also said it had not received official notification approving his travel abroad, despite earlier reports that military authorities had given preliminary approval.

The family renewed its appeal to Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and army chief, asking him to consider Bashir’s medical situation and allow him to receive treatment outside the country.

Bashir’s detention

Bashir was removed from power in April 2019 after nearly three decades as Sudan’s president.

He was subsequently convicted of corruption and illicit financing and was serving a prison sentence when war broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in 2023.

Before the conflict, Bashir had been moved between prison and medical facilities. He was later transferred to Merowe in northern Sudan, where he remained under military guard.

His recent return to the Khartoum area comes amid continuing uncertainty over his legal status and medical future.

Bashir is also wanted by the International Criminal Court over allegations including genocide and war crimes connected to the Darfur conflict. Any decision to allow him to leave Sudan for medical treatment could therefore have significant legal and political implications.

The exact nature of Bashir’s current medical condition has not been publicly disclosed.
