Power outages have been reported in parts of Ukraine following overnight Russian strikes in the east, raising fresh questions about a proposed energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially expressed surprise at Trump’s announcement but later indicated that Kyiv would support the arrangement if Moscow agreed to it.
Russia had not publicly confirmed its acceptance of the proposed ceasefire at the time of the report.
Uncertainty Over Proposed Ceasefire
Trump’s announcement has drawn attention because the terms and implementation of the proposed arrangement remained unclear.
The US president has been urging Ukraine to halt strikes against Russian oil infrastructure, reportedly in connection with a recently reached arrangement involving the release of diesel to the United States and the wider global market.
However, the lack of a clear public response from Moscow has left uncertainty over whether a formal agreement has been reached and whether both sides intend to observe it.
Energy Infrastructure Remains Under Threat
The latest reported outages highlight the continued vulnerability of Ukraine’s electricity supply during the war.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure during winter periods since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Such attacks have placed pressure on electricity generation and distribution, raising concerns about the impact on households and essential services.
The reported strikes also underline the challenges facing diplomatic efforts to limit attacks on energy facilities while the broader conflict continues.
Kyiv Awaits Moscow’s Position
Zelensky’s stated willingness to support the proposal if Russia does the same leaves Moscow’s response central to the initiative’s prospects.
Until both sides publicly clarify their positions and the terms of any arrangement, it remains uncertain whether the proposed energy ceasefire will lead to a sustained reduction in attacks on energy infrastructure.
For Ukraine, the immediate concern remains the restoration of electricity in affected areas and the protection of critical infrastructure as the war continues.
