Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Segun Showunmi has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will defeat Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, even if he does not attend every campaign rally.
Showunmi made the statement during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday, arguing that Tinubu possessed greater political wisdom than the opposition figures expected to challenge him.
“That guy called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a thousand years wiser than them, and I guarantee you he’s going to defeat them again,” he said.
Showunmi’s comments come amid debate over Tinubu’s suggestion that he might not attend all APC presidential campaign rallies ahead of the election.
Rally Attendance Not Decisive, PDP Chieftain Says
Showunmi argued that Tinubu’s absence from some campaign events would not necessarily prevent him from securing another electoral victory.
He suggested that opposition politicians should not interpret the President’s possible absence from rallies as a sign of political weakness.
“If he doesn’t come for the rally, better luck next time. They can look at him on television. If they don’t like him on TV, they can go to Aso Rock,” Showunmi said.
Tinubu made his remarks about possibly skipping some rallies during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council. The comments generated reactions, including questions about the significance of a presidential candidate’s presence at campaign events.
Questions Atiku’s Position on Fuel
Showunmi also criticised Atiku Abubakar over what he described as a change in the former vice-president’s position on fuel.
He argued that Atiku had previously regarded fuel as a waste before adopting a different position.
Atiku was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, with Showunmi serving as his spokesperson during that campaign.
The criticism reflects the broader political debate over fuel policy, economic hardship and the choices available to Nigerians ahead of the next election.
Election Competition Builds Ahead of 2027
The presidential contest is expected to generate further debate over economic policy, regional support, campaign strategies and the records of the candidates.
INEC’s current election calendar lists January 16, 2027, as the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections. <Cite refs={[“turn256777search0″,”turn256777search3”]}/>
While Showunmi has predicted a Tinubu victory, his statement represents his personal political assessment, not a confirmed election result. The eventual outcome will depend on voters and the electoral process.
