A court in Ghana has sentenced a regional chairman of an opposition political party to prison after finding him guilty of engaging in illegal mining, commonly referred to in the country as “galamsey.”

The conviction marks another significant step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, which authorities say has caused widespread environmental degradation, polluted rivers, and destroyed farmlands across several regions.

According to court proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence linking the opposition figure to unauthorized mining activities carried out in violation of Ghana’s mining and environmental laws. After reviewing the evidence, the court handed down a custodial sentence and reaffirmed the need to enforce the country’s laws without fear or favour.

The case has attracted widespread public attention, given the convict’s prominent political position. Legal experts say the ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to holding individuals accountable regardless of their status or political affiliation.

Government officials have repeatedly vowed to intensify the fight against illegal mining, describing it as a major threat to Ghana’s environment, public health, and sustainable economic development. Security agencies have also increased operations to dismantle illegal mining sites and prosecute offenders.

Meanwhile, representatives of the opposition party have reacted to the judgment, with some expressing disappointment and indicating that they are considering legal options, including an appeal, where permitted by law.

The conviction comes amid renewed national efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and strengthen enforcement of mining regulations. Environmental advocates have welcomed the ruling, arguing that consistent prosecution of offenders is essential to curbing illegal mining and preserving the country’s ecosystems for future generations.
