Doctor Olusina Ajidahun recently addressed the concept of palliative care following reports from the daughters of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, also known as Ogogo, that hospitals had halted his treatment for stage-four cancer.
Ajidahun, recognized on X as The Bearded Dr Sina, mentioned that the description of Ogogo’s situation might be misinterpreted, particularly the suggestion that hospitals had “refused to treat” him.
He clarified that when a patient reaches stage-four cancer and all possible chemotherapy or other treatments have been attempted, doctors might recommend palliative care. This approach focuses on symptom management, enhancing comfort, and maintaining quality of life.
He cautioned against framing such situations as a refusal of treatment by hospitals, as it could lead to a negative view of medical professionals.
Ajidahun also advised the public against using unverified herbal remedies for advanced cancer, as they may cause further health issues.
He further explained that stage-four cancer indicates that the cancer has metastasized beyond its original site. Treatment options depend on the type of cancer, its progression, and the patient’s unique circumstances.
Expressing his sympathy for Ogogo’s family, he encouraged them to collaborate closely with the medical team handling the actor’s care.
The doctor emphasized that he is not part of Ogogo’s medical care and was commenting independently on the videos shared by the actor’s daughters.
