Haiti Election: OAS, CARICOM Push for Greater Security and Credible Polls

A high-level delegation from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has arrived in Haiti to support efforts to restore security, strengthen state institutions and prepare for upcoming elections.

The delegation, led by OAS Secretary-General Albert R. Ramdin and CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, met Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and senior government officials on Monday.

The sides signed agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation with foreign partners and non-governmental organisations working to combat gang violence and assist communities affected by the crisis.

Focus on December elections

The OAS and CARICOM delegation also met Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council to discuss preparations for the electoral process.

Haiti is scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on December 13, 2026, although widespread gang violence remains a major challenge to creating a secure environment for voters and candidates.

The delegation also held discussions with senior Haitian National Police officials and international security partners on protecting civilians and restoring government authority in areas affected by armed gangs.

Regional support

The OAS said the mission comes at a critical stage as Haiti seeks to improve security and create conditions for credible elections.

Ramdin said the joint mission is focused on strengthening coordination in security, elections, institutional development, humanitarian assistance and long-term development.

The visit highlights growing regional efforts to help Haiti overcome its prolonged security and political crisis and return to stronger democratic institutions.
