Military Veterans Protest at Defence Ministry as Security Presence Intensifies

Heavy security has been deployed around the headquarters of Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence in Abuja as retired military personnel protest over the non-implementation of pension adjustments linked to the recent salary increase for serving military officers.

The protest is being led by retired Colonel Azubuike Nas under the umbrella of the Military Veterans Association of Nigeria.

Security personnel from the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, Vehicle Inspection Officers and other agencies have been deployed around the ministry and surrounding areas in an effort to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The veterans are demanding that they also benefit from the consequential pension adjustments following President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of a new salary structure for serving military personnel.

Veterans Demand Pension Adjustment

The retired officers argue that their years of service should not be overlooked following the salary increase granted to serving military personnel.

Some of the veterans said they served the country for 35 years or more and should therefore receive corresponding adjustments to their pensions.

President Tinubu recently approved an enhanced salary structure for serving military personnel as part of efforts to improve their welfare and strengthen their effectiveness in combating security threats across the country.

Heavy Security Around Defence Headquarters

Armed soldiers have also been stationed around the Defence Headquarters, with security personnel deployed along major roads leading to the area.

The heightened security presence has affected traffic movement around Abuja’s city centre, with motorists experiencing significant delays and gridlock in some areas.

The veterans’ protest comes amid growing calls for improved welfare and pension conditions for retired members of Nigeria’s armed forces.
