Chad and France Rebuild Military Ties After 2024 Defence Agreement Was Ended

Less than two years after France completed the withdrawal of its military forces from Chad, the two countries appear to be moving towards renewed defence cooperation.

The development marks a significant shift from late 2024, when Chad ended its defence cooperation agreement with France and called for greater control over its own security affairs.

France had maintained a military presence in Chad for decades. Before the agreement was terminated, about 1,000 French troops were stationed in the country, providing intelligence, logistical assistance and other support to the Chadian armed forces.

The withdrawal was presented by the Chadian government as part of its effort to strengthen national sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign military partners.

Security Challenges Remain

Since the French departure, Chad has continued to face serious security threats.

Militant activity linked to Boko Haram remains a concern around the Lake Chad region, while clashes involving rebel groups have also created instability in other parts of the country.

Chad’s difficulty in developing alternative military partnerships has added pressure on the government as it seeks to respond to these security challenges.

The apparent reopening of military ties with France could therefore provide N’Djamena with access to additional training, intelligence and security support.

Strategic Interests for France

For France, renewed cooperation with Chad could restore an important strategic relationship in Central Africa and the wider Sahel region.

Chad occupies a strategically important position close to several conflict-affected areas, making the country valuable to France’s broader regional security interests.

However, the move could also create political complications for President Mahamat Idriss Déby, particularly among younger Chadians who have increasingly embraced calls for an end to France’s traditional military influence in Africa.

A New Phase in Relations

The renewed engagement does not necessarily mean a return to the large-scale French military presence that existed before 2024.

Instead, both countries appear to be exploring a new form of security cooperation that reflects Chad’s demand for greater sovereignty while allowing France to maintain strategic links in the region.

The development could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Chad-France relations after decades of close military cooperation followed by a sharp diplomatic and security break.
