Former Labour Party presidential running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has explained why he decided to part ways with Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
Datti, who was Obi’s running mate during the 2023 presidential election, said he left because he believed Obi had yet to present a clear plan for Nigeria.
The former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV while discussing his political journey and his relationship with Obi.
According to Datti, he worked hard to support Obi during the 2023 election but later became concerned about what he described as the absence of a comprehensive plan for the country.
He said he personally advised Obi to develop a clear roadmap for Nigeria, stressing that his decision to leave was not based on personal disagreement.
“Peter Obi didn’t abandon me; I left because he doesn’t have a plan for Nigeria,” Datti said.
He added that Obi was aware of the level of support he gave him during their time together and insisted that he still respected the former Anambra State governor.
Datti also expressed disappointment over some of Obi’s political decisions, saying he found the developments unfortunate even though he acknowledged that Obi had the right to make his own choices.
Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party before later moving into the opposition political realignment that eventually saw him emerge as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Datti, however, said he would rather remain fair in his political assessments than support political figures without what he considers a convincing reason.
The former presidential candidate’s running mate maintained that his decision to leave Obi was driven by his concerns about Nigeria’s future and the need for a clear political direction.
