Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has highlighted the financial pressure associated with rising medicine prices, saying the cost of drugs made it difficult for his family to care for his late mother.

Amaechi spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, broadcast on Friday, where he criticised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He said the difficulties his family experienced while trying to obtain medicines for his mother reflected a wider challenge confronting Nigerians who need medical treatment but struggle to afford it.

Personal Experience Fuels Amaechi’s Criticism

The former transportation minister said the rising cost of medicines created difficulties for his family during his mother’s final period of life.

He attributed those financial pressures to the policies of the Tinubu administration, arguing that the economic situation had made access to essential drugs harder for ordinary Nigerians.

His comments brought a personal dimension to the wider debate over the cost of living and the affordability of healthcare.

However, Amaechi’s statement represents his assessment of the circumstances surrounding his family’s experience; it does not independently establish the medical cause of his mother’s death.

Nigerians Face Questions Over Medicine Affordability

Amaechi also drew attention to the difficulties faced by households attempting to pay for medicines and other healthcare needs.

For families managing illnesses that require regular medication, increases in drug prices can place additional pressure on household budgets.

His remarks have therefore highlighted concerns about how economic conditions affect access to treatment, particularly for people with limited financial resources.

The issue extends beyond the cost of medicines to the broader question of whether families can consistently afford the healthcare services they need.

Economic Policy Debate Continues

Tinubu’s economic policies have attracted public debate over their effects on household expenses and living standards.

Amaechi’s intervention adds his personal account to the political discussion, focusing specifically on medicine costs and the challenges of caring for an ill family member.

The former governor’s comments also underline the importance of examining healthcare affordability as part of wider discussions about economic conditions in Nigeria.

The statement has renewed attention on the relationship between medicine prices, household finances and access to essential treatment.
