British singer Ed Sheeran has addressed the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his US tour, saying the situation in Gaza is “catastrophic and unjustifiable” while also raising concerns about freedom of expression in the music industry.
Sheeran spoke during his concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, his first US performance since Macklemore was removed from the remaining dates of the singer’s Loop Tour.
The issue began after Macklemore expressed support for Palestinians during a September 4 performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The rapper also used the stage to say “Free Palestine.”
According to the tour promoter, Macklemore was subsequently dropped from the remaining US shows after venue owners raised objections to his participation.
Sheeran Addresses the Controversy
Speaking to fans in Philadelphia, Sheeran said he had never planned to become what he described as an “activist musician.” However, he acknowledged that the controversy had placed him in the middle of a much broader discussion about freedom of speech, the Israel-Palestinian conflict and the role of artists.
Sheeran also apologised for aspects of the way the situation had unfolded, explaining that he had been involved in discussions with venues while efforts were made to find a solution.
The singer expressed concern about the possibility of venues influencing what performers are allowed to say during concerts.
Sheeran Condemns Hamas Attack and Gaza Situation
While discussing the conflict, Sheeran described the Hamas attacks of October 2023 as “horrific.”
He also criticised the subsequent situation in Gaza, describing it as “catastrophic,” “unjustifiable” and “disproportionate.” He further referred to what he characterised as systemic injustice in the occupied West Bank.
His comments marked a notable change from his earlier position that his concerts should primarily remain spaces for music rather than political debate.
Before the Philadelphia show, Sheeran had indicated that audiences attended his concerts to enjoy music and that he wanted his performances to remain centred on unity and humanity.
Macklemore Controversy Sparks Wider Reaction
Macklemore’s removal from the tour prompted reactions from other supporting performers, with some reportedly withdrawing from the remaining shows in solidarity with the rapper.
The controversy also attracted demonstrations outside the Philadelphia venue. Pro-Palestinian protesters used the gathering to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and question the decision involving Macklemore.
At the same time, some concertgoers argued that music performances should remain separate from political disputes.
The episode has therefore expanded beyond a disagreement involving one opening act. It has become part of a wider debate about artists, political expression, freedom of speech and the responsibilities of concert venues.
For Sheeran, the controversy has brought him directly into a sensitive international debate despite his previous reluctance to position himself as a political activist.
