The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The police said the woman had reportedly been engaged by the lecturer and was sent out to purchase water.
Police arrest three people
The Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident on Tuesday and said three people had been arrested in connection with the case.
According to Ikoedem, police received a report at about 8pm on October 5, 2026, concerning the lecturer’s death at the hotel.
She said the woman returned after buying water and found Uwuigbe lying dead inside the room.

University confirms lecturer was staff member
The university also confirmed Uwuigbe’s employment status while stressing that the incident did not occur on its campus.
AAU Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the institution was not denying that Uwuigbe was a staff member but described the incident as a private matter.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika told PM News.
He also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university and that the incident happened outside the institution.
