Egypt Unveils First Locally Developed Industrial Robot

Egypt has unveiled what it describes as its first locally developed industrial robot, marking another step in the country’s effort to expand domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported industrial technology.

The robotic arm was officially launched and handed over during a ceremony attended by Egypt’s Industry Minister Khaled Hashem on Wednesday.

According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the robot was designed and developed by Egyptian engineers using locally produced technology.

80% of Components Made Locally

Local media reports said about 80 percent of the robot’s components are currently manufactured domestically.

Developers are targeting 90 percent local content as Egypt works to develop domestic production of the robot’s motor and other key components.

The technology is already being used commercially.

The robotic arm is being integrated into packaging equipment operated by Egyptian manufacturer QB. It is designed to support industrial packaging and automation on production lines.

Egypt Pushes Industrial Technology

Minister Khaled Hashem said the local production of machinery and manufacturing equipment is an important part of Egypt’s industrial strategy.

He said the “Made in Egypt” label should increasingly represent the country’s ability to develop technology, manufacture industrial equipment and participate in global supply chains.

The ministry said it will monitor the robot’s performance in industrial applications.

The assessment is expected to help determine its effectiveness and encourage more Egyptian factories to adopt locally developed automation technology.

Africa Expands Robotics Capabilities

Egypt’s development comes as other African countries also build expertise in industrial robotics.

Tunisia’s TIRA Robots, for example, has developed robotic arms designed for integration into production lines.

Other engineering companies, including XPERT-MECA, work on automated machinery and integrate industrial robots manufactured by international companies such as KUKA.

Industrial automation is also well established in countries including South Africa and Morocco, particularly within their automotive manufacturing industries.

Morocco-based MTS Robotics develops automated systems for applications including welding, assembly, handling and packaging.

Robots Beyond Industrial Manufacturing

Egypt has also seen locally developed robotics projects outside traditional manufacturing.

In September, a team from Tanta University won the national RoboDam 2026 competition with an autonomous robot designed for cleaning operations.

The university said the machine could be produced locally at a significantly lower cost than imported alternatives.

Egypt’s latest industrial robot project highlights the country’s broader push to develop domestic engineering capabilities while increasing the role of automation in manufacturing.
