The United Kingdom maintains a list of countries whose citizens do not need to provide proof of funds when applying for a Student visa under the differential evidence requirement.
Under this policy, eligible applicants are not required to submit financial evidence with their initial visa application. However, they must still have the necessary funds and may be asked by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to provide proof before a decision is made on their application.
Among African nations, only four countries currently qualify for this exemption:
– Botswana
– Mauritius
– Tunisia
– British Nationals (Overseas), as applicable under UK immigration rules
This exemption means students from these countries are not required to submit bank statements or other financial documents with their Student visa application initially. However, they must still meet all financial requirements, including having enough funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses, since UKVI can request evidence at any stage of the application process.
For applicants from countries not on the differential evidence list—such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Cameroon, Zambia, Tanzania, and most other African nations—proof of funds is still mandatory. They must show they have held the required amount for at least 28 consecutive days, with the closing balance dated within 31 days of submitting their visa application.
The UK government periodically reviews the list of eligible countries based on immigration compliance and risk assessments. Students are therefore advised to check the most recent guidance before applying for a visa.
