Lawyers across Kenya have commenced a nationwide strike to protest alleged corruption within the judiciary and persistent delays in the administration of justice, raising concerns about the efficiency and credibility of the country’s legal system.

The industrial action, led by members of the legal profession, is intended to draw attention to longstanding complaints over delayed court proceedings, allegations of unethical practices, and challenges affecting access to timely justice.

Representatives of the striking lawyers said the protest is aimed at pushing for comprehensive judicial reforms that will strengthen transparency, accountability, and public confidence in Kenya’s courts. They argued that prolonged case backlogs and allegations of misconduct have undermined the effectiveness of the justice system and denied many citizens timely resolution of legal disputes.

The lawyers also called on judicial authorities and the government to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the concerns raised by members of the Bar and other stakeholders in the justice sector.

The strike has disrupted legal proceedings in several courts across the country, with numerous hearings and trials reportedly postponed pending further developments. Litigants and legal practitioners alike have expressed concern over the impact of the industrial action on individuals seeking justice.

Judicial officials have yet to issue a comprehensive response to the demands of the striking lawyers. However, observers expect discussions between the legal profession and the judiciary to continue in an effort to resolve the impasse and restore normal court operations.

Governance experts say an independent, transparent, and efficient judiciary remains essential for upholding the rule of law, protecting constitutional rights, and maintaining public confidence in democratic institutions.

As negotiations are expected to continue, many Kenyans are hopeful that the dispute will lead to meaningful reforms that improve the delivery of justice and enhance the integrity of the country’s judicial system.
