One person has died following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State, while emergency responders have continued searching for possible survivors.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, prompting a rescue operation coordinated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
In a statement, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received a distress call at approximately 12:10 a.m. and immediately activated its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base.
According to the agency, responders arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m. and discovered that the two-storey structure, which was still under construction, had collapsed.
Rescue Operation Underway
Preliminary observations suggested that construction workers might have been trapped beneath the debris, prompting emergency personnel to begin search-and-rescue operations.
A subsequent report indicated that three adult men had been rescued alive and one person had been confirmed dead. Rescue efforts were continuing as responders worked to establish whether anyone else remained trapped.
Emergency personnel were working to locate victims, evacuate survivors and maintain safety around the collapsed structure.
The response involved LASEMA and other emergency and security agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service and the Nigeria Police Force.
Cause of Collapse Yet to Be Established
The cause of the building collapse had not been established in the available reports.
The incident is likely to prompt renewed attention to construction safety and compliance with building regulations in Lagos, where building collapses have repeatedly resulted in fatalities and injuries.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any construction-related violations contributed to the collapse.
Emergency Response Continues
LASEMA has urged residents and developers to prioritise safety and comply with applicable building regulations.
Members of the public can report emergencies in Lagos through the state’s emergency numbers, 767 and 112.
Further updates on the rescue operation and the condition of those rescued are expected as more information becomes available.
