Manchester City are preparing to challenge findings that the club breached Premier League financial regulations, with the source of £830.69 million in sponsorship funding expected to be a major issue in the appeal.

The club has consistently denied wrongdoing and is expected to argue that payments supporting several sponsorship agreements came from the Abu Dhabi government rather than its owner, Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG), according to BBC Sport reporting.

Commission Rules Against Manchester City

An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of charges relating to financial breaches between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

The commission concluded that the club artificially inflated revenue through sponsorship arrangements and used mechanisms that concealed the true extent of certain financial liabilities.

The Premier League argued that the arrangements formed part of a disguised funding scheme that made the club’s finances appear compliant with the competition’s regulations.

Dispute Over Sponsorship Payments

A central issue in the case is the origin of money used to support sponsorship agreements involving companies linked to Abu Dhabi.

Manchester City are expected to argue that the disputed payments were funded by the Abu Dhabi government rather than ADUG.

However, the commission rejected the club’s explanation about the source of the funds. It described the account as one developed after the events to conceal the underlying arrangements.

The appeal is expected to examine the evidence behind the sponsorship payments and the commission’s interpretation of the funding structure.

Financial Rules Under Scrutiny

The case highlights the scrutiny Premier League clubs face over sponsorship income, financial reporting and compliance with competition rules.

The disputed period covers nine seasons, from 2009-10 to 2017-18. The findings relate to historical financial arrangements and should be distinguished from any separate proceedings or decisions that may follow.

Manchester City’s appeal will give the club an opportunity to challenge the commission’s conclusions through the established process.

The eventual outcome will depend on the arguments and evidence considered during the appeal.
