The media aide to Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, Daniel Ezeigwe, has disputed a statement by former Anambra Governor Peter Obi that he and his wife are godparents to the children of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Obi made the statement on Friday while speaking at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu.
The former governor was discussing his relationship with Soludo amid recent public exchanges over Anambra State’s finances.
Obi said his political differences with Soludo should not be interpreted as a personal dispute. He added that he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children and that the two families remained connected.
“My wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close. So we are not quarrelling, and we will never quarrel.”
Obi also said that if he met Soludo, they would embrace despite their political differences.
First Lady’s aide disputes claim
Following the circulation of the video on social media, Ezeigwe said the office of the Anambra First Lady had received several calls and inquiries seeking clarification.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the aide said Obi was not a godfather to any of Soludo’s children.
He said the clarification was necessary to correct what he described as an inaccurate claim concerning the relationship between Obi and the governor’s family.
Statement comes amid political differences
The exchange comes amid recent disagreements between Obi and the Soludo administration over issues surrounding Anambra State’s finances.
Obi has maintained that his administration did not leave the state with debt when he left office in 2014, while the Soludo administration has made different claims about inherited financial obligations.
The latest dispute over the godparent claim is separate from the financial disagreement between the two political figures.
