President Bola Tinubu has urged state governors to prioritize developing road networks instead of constructing flyovers in areas with low traffic. He stressed that better connectivity would foster economic growth and enhance security across the nation.
With state governments now receiving substantially higher allocations from the Federation Account, Tinubu highlighted their enhanced ability to invest in infrastructure that directly improves citizens’ lives.
These remarks were made during a meeting with a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo State, led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. They visited the Presidential Villa to congratulate Tinubu on the successful rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, who were held captive for 56 days.
Addressing the delegation, which included former governors, Tinubu emphasized that increased federal allocations should be directed towards projects with lasting economic and social benefits. He noted that while governance costs remain high, states now receive significantly more resources than before. Consequently, they no longer need to borrow for salary payments, and pensioners are receiving their rightful entitlements.
Governors were encouraged to focus on projects that improve transportation and security, rather than investing in unnecessary flyovers. Building roads and arterial networks can enhance people’s quality of life and give security agencies better access to remote communities.
Tinubu also revealed that the terrorists behind the Oyo abduction had demanded the release of detained members and ransom. However, the Federal Government refused to meet these demands, maintaining a policy of not negotiating with terrorists or paying ransoms for hostages’ release.
The President announced plans to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions to tackle security challenges like those illustrated by the Oriire case. This expansion aims to enhance troop deployment and responsiveness to threats such as terrorism and banditry.
He commended the armed forces for their professionalism and dedication in rescuing the victims. Tinubu reassured the traditional rulers of his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security while urging state governments to wisely utilize the increased federal allocations for projects that directly benefit citizens and support sustainable development.
