Burkina Faso’s transitional leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has unveiled new military uniforms made from locally woven Burkinabè fabric, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to promoting local production, cultural heritage, and national self-reliance.

The uniforms were officially introduced during the graduation ceremony of the 25th Class of Active-Duty Officer Cadets at the Georges-Namoano Military Academy, where 218 newly commissioned officers marched in attire inspired by the traditional “Cencengu” fabric of the Gulmu region in eastern Burkina Faso.

The initiative forms part of Traoré’s broader policy of encouraging the use of locally manufactured goods across government institutions while reducing the country’s dependence on imported products.

Since assuming power in September 2022, Traoré has consistently advocated economic independence, support for domestic industries, and greater reliance on Burkinabè-made products. His government says the adoption of the new uniforms recognizes the skill and creativity of local weavers while preserving the country’s rich cultural identity.

Officials also described the new military attire as a symbol of national pride, resilience, and sovereignty, reflecting the government’s determination to strengthen local industries alongside ongoing security reforms.

The introduction of the uniforms is one of several measures taken by the Traoré administration to promote African self-reliance and stimulate economic opportunities for local artisans and textile producers.

The move has drawn praise from supporters, who see it as another step toward reinforcing Burkina Faso’s national identity while demonstrating confidence in the country’s indigenous craftsmanship.
