In Greece, a significant search-and-rescue mission is in progress following the collision of two firefighting helicopters combating wildfires west of Athens on Sunday. Although the Greek fire authorities have confirmed the incident, information about the crews and any casualties remains limited as emergency responders carry out their rescue operations.
This accident coincides with Greece’s ongoing struggle against several wildfires, intensified by recent heatwaves sweeping across southern Europe. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the situation as “extremely difficult,” highlighting that firefighters are on high alert due to rising temperatures and strong winds fueling the fires.
Meteorologist Theodore Giannaros emphasized the exceptional challenges facing emergency crews amid severe wildfire conditions that began last Wednesday. He reported that more than 100,000 hectares have already been ravaged, complicating containment efforts for both ground personnel and aerial units.
Giannaros pointed out that climate change is exacerbating wildfire conditions through extended heatwaves, drought, and dry vegetation, while also noting that human factors such as negligence and suspected arson contribute significantly to the fire outbreaks.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay vigilant as efforts to manage multiple active fires across the country continue.
