2027 Race Begins: Tinubu, Obi, Atiku and Other Candidates Set for Presidential Campaigns

Campaigning for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election officially kicks off on Wednesday, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic track record and the nation’s security challenges at the forefront of the political contest.

With the election just months away, President Tinubu is vying for a second term amid heated public debate concerning his economic reforms, escalating living costs, and ongoing security issues.

Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu has implemented significant economic policies, notably the removal of a long-standing fuel subsidy. The government contends that these reforms were essential to alleviate pressure on public finances and strengthen the economy.

Nevertheless, these measures have exerted considerable strain on households, with the naira depreciating and inflation climbing sharply before beginning to moderate.

According to the latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, headline inflation stood at 15.43 percent in July.

Economy in Focus

Analysts suggest that the cost of living is poised to be a major factor influencing voters’ choices in the 2027 election.

Afolabi Adekaiyaoja, author of the *Bellwether* Nigeria politics newsletter, noted that economic conditions persist as a concern impacting Nigerians across various regions.

“The economy is the most pressing issue. It transcends different parts of the country and continues to influence security and development matters,” he stated.

While some economists and investors back the government’s reform agenda, numerous Nigerians continue to grapple with rising prices for food, transportation, housing, and other essentials.

The World Bank estimates that over 60 percent of Nigerians now live below the poverty line, underscoring the magnitude of the country’s economic challenges.

Security Challenges Persist

In addition to economic concerns, security issues are anticipated to play a significant role in the campaigns.

Nigeria remains under threat from jihadist groups in the northeast, armed bandit gangs in the northwest and north-central regions, communal tensions involving farmers and herders, as well as separatist movements in the southeast.

Ladd Serwat, a senior Africa analyst at the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), indicated that violence has surged since 2024, chiefly due to the spread of armed banditry across northern and central Nigeria.

He also highlighted ongoing conflict in Borno State, which is still the epicenter of the country’s protracted jihadist insurgency.

Fragmented Opposition Boosts Tinubu

Despite economic challenges posing a significant hurdle for President Tinubu, analysts suggest divisions within the opposition may tilt advantages in his favor.

Opposition parties and figures have faced difficulties maintaining unity, with internal conflicts and legal battles detracting from their ability to present a cohesive alternative policy platform.

Adekaiyaoja remarked that the opposition has been “too entangled in internal and legal matters” to effectively differentiate its policies from those of Tinubu’s administration.

The 2027 election is thus expected to center around whether voters believe Tinubu’s reforms are starting to yield long-term benefits or if the current hardships facing households necessitate a change in government.

For many voters, economic survival may ultimately be their deciding factor.

“The economy and cost of living are my top concerns,” said Afolayan Abdullahi, a 42-year-old civil servant planning to support Tinubu.

As campaigning begins, political parties and candidates now have the task of persuading millions of Nigerians that their policies will address the country’s economic struggles, security issues, and broader developmental needs.
