The Government of Mali has firmly rejected any suggestion of a direct United States military role in its ongoing campaign against Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), the al-Qaeda-linked extremist group responsible for a wave of deadly attacks across the Sahel.
Malian authorities said the country’s security strategy will continue to be directed and implemented by its own leadership in line with national priorities, stressing that the protection of Mali’s territorial integrity and sovereignty remains non-negotiable.
The statement comes amid renewed international attention on the deteriorating security situation in the region, where JNIM has expanded its operations, targeting military bases, public infrastructure, and civilian communities. The insurgent group has intensified attacks in recent months, posing a major challenge to stability in Mali and neighboring countries.
Officials in Bamako maintained that while Mali remains open to cooperation with international partners, such cooperation must respect the country’s independence and strategic decisions. The government emphasized that external support should be based on mutual respect rather than direct military involvement in domestic security operations.
Since the military-led authorities took power, Mali has reshaped its security partnerships, reducing its reliance on traditional Western allies while strengthening ties with other international partners. The government has repeatedly argued that its revised approach is intended to provide a more effective response to terrorism while preserving national sovereignty.
Security analysts note that the fight against JNIM remains one of the most complex conflicts in West Africa, with the extremist network operating across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Despite ongoing military offensives, the group continues to exploit remote areas and weak border controls to launch coordinated attacks.
The Malian government reiterated its commitment to defeating terrorism through a comprehensive national strategy combining military operations, intelligence gathering, and regional cooperation. Authorities also called on citizens to remain vigilant and support the country’s armed forces as efforts continue to restore lasting peace and security.
