American R&B star Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after receiving an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in 2023.
American singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for his role in an attack on music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw at a London nightclub.
The 37-year-old musician was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, after pleading guilty to one count of affray in July.
The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve the prison term immediately. However, he could face imprisonment if he commits another offence during the suspension period.
Judge Describes Attack as Dangerous
During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the incident as serious violence, highlighting the danger posed by repeatedly striking someone with a glass bottle, particularly on the head.
Evidence presented in court showed that Brown struck Diaw with a tequila bottle during the confrontation at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district in February 2023.
The attack lasted approximately 20 seconds, according to evidence presented in court, including CCTV footage.
The judge said the use of the bottle carried a risk of causing significantly more serious injuries than those ultimately sustained by Diaw.
The court heard that Brown played the leading role in the violence, initiating the physical confrontation and using the bottle as a weapon.
Victim Sustained Head and Knee Injuries
Diaw was taken to hospital following the incident, suffering injuries to his head and knee.
Prosecutors told the court that CCTV footage showed Brown striking Diaw several times with the bottle, including twice on the head.
The confrontation also involved Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who pleaded guilty to affray.
Akinlolu received a four-month prison sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 towards prosecution costs.
Judge Says Fame Does Not Guarantee Special Treatment
Judge Baumgartner stressed that Brown’s celebrity status and commercial success did not entitle him to preferential treatment under the law.
The court nevertheless considered several mitigating factors when determining the sentence, including Brown’s guilty plea, stable employment and charitable activities.
The judge also considered Brown’s previous convictions involving violence, while acknowledging that those convictions dated back several years.
The sentence means Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment despite the seriousness of the incident.
More Serious Charges Dropped
Brown initially faced more serious allegations connected to the incident. Following his guilty plea to affray, prosecutors dropped charges including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.
The case attracted considerable public attention because of Brown’s international music career and the circumstances surrounding the nightclub attack.
The sentencing brings the criminal proceedings over the 2023 incident to a significant stage, although the suspended prison term remains in place for the specified period.
The ruling serves as a reminder that a suspended sentence is still a prison sentence imposed by the court, even though immediate imprisonment is not required.
