INEC: Relocated Voters Should Not Re-Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reminded Nigerians who have moved to a new address that they should update their existing voter details rather than register from scratch, as the Continuous Voter Registration exercise nears its final phase.

Officials say the CVR portal and INEC offices nationwide allow registered voters to transfer their records, correct biodata errors, or replace damaged and lost Permanent Voter Cards without creating a fresh entry. The commission warns that double registration is an offence and uses data matching systems to flag duplicate entries.

Officials at the commission’s local government offices have also been sensitising residents on the difference between transfer of registration and fresh registration, noting that many voters mistakenly believe relocation requires starting the process anew. Field officers say this confusion has, in past cycles, led to unnecessary long queues and processing delays.

Civil society groups partnering with INEC on voter education have echoed the message, urging Nigerians in border communities and rapidly growing urban areas, where relocation is most common, to prioritise updating their records early rather than waiting until the final days before the deadline.

INEC has also announced that the Register of Voters will be open for public claims and objections from July 23rd to July 29th, giving citizens a chance to review their information before processing begins.

INEC has appealed to all eligible voters, especially those who relocated or have not yet updated their details, to take advantage of the remaining days before the deadline, warning that late applicants risk missing out on their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 general election. As one commission official put it, the choice to register is voluntary, but the consequence of not doing so is exclusion from the process.

For the headline, something like “INEC: Relocated Voters Should Not Re-Register” is short, punchy, and keeps your key search terms, INEC, voters, register, right up front. Want me to try a couple more headline options for you to compare?
