Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, has emphasized the need for increased accountability among Nigeria’s military leadership. He asserts that both serving and former army chiefs should be accountable for the country’s escalating insecurity issues.
Amadi expressed these views while addressing the ongoing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent assaults affecting various regions. Despite substantial security funding over the years, many Nigerians remain fearful as criminal groups extend their reach.
He argues that combating insecurity demands more than just boosting financial support or military presence. The government should demand tangible results from security leaders and ensure accountability for those failing in their roles.
Amadi insists that some army chiefs must be held accountable for the rampant insecurity, highlighting that strong leadership and accountability are crucial for enhancing Nigeria’s security framework.
He emphasized that accountability is a cornerstone of democratic governance and should encompass all public institutions, including the military. While acknowledging the dedication of military personnel on the front lines, Amadi advocates for evaluating senior commanders based on their operational effectiveness and resource management.
Furthermore, Amadi advised the Federal Government to bolster intelligence gathering, improve coordination among security agencies, and invest in modern equipment and technology to effectively combat terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes.
He also calls for greater transparency in defense spending, asserting that Nigerians have the right to understand how security funds are allocated and whether they achieve intended outcomes.
Amadi maintains that restoring public trust in the nation’s security institutions will necessitate significant political commitment, institutional reforms, and accountability at every command level.
His remarks come in response to heightened public concern over repeated community attacks nationwide. Many Nigerians are urging for more effective strategies to address the country’s security issues.
Security experts suggest that while the Nigerian Armed Forces have made progress against insurgents and other criminal entities, sustained reforms, enhanced intelligence, and reinforced accountability among top officials will be vital for achieving enduring peace and stability in the country.
