U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who is presently under scrutiny due to allegations of a workplace affair and criticism related to an unsuccessful private investment initiative.
Trump commented on Truth Social that replacing Infantino would be a significant error for FIFA. He praised the Italian-Swiss lawyer as “fantastic” and attributed to him the success of hosting what he deemed the most successful World Cup ever. Trump stressed that future events wouldn’t reach similar levels of success or profitability without Infantino’s leadership.
Trump’s stance differs from that of US Soccer, Canada Soccer, and several football organizations in Central America and the Caribbean. These groups have all released statements criticizing FIFA’s leader.
With re-election approaching next March, Infantino has denied any allegations of wrongdoing. FIFA has also voiced its support for him, characterizing the criticism as an effort by certain parties to destabilize the organization.
Various football organizations, including the Confederation of African Football and South America’s CONMEBOL, support Infantino alongside Trump.
FIFA proposed a plan to potentially generate $4.2 billion by creating a new commercial entity called the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which would oversee significant events such as the World Cup and Club World Cup. However, Infantino has been under increasing pressure regarding his management of this proposal, culminating in heightened demands for his resignation following its withdrawal.
