The Ghana Police Service has initiated a manhunt for an individual caught on a viral video assaulting a handcuffed pastor, identified as Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei. Adjei was accused of making derogatory and offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
In the footage shared by SaharaReporters, the pastor is seen standing, restrained by handcuffs, as a man in traditional attire comes from behind and slaps him. After the assault, the assailant briefly lingers behind the pastor before departing.
A statement from the Ghana Police Service, released on Thursday, strongly condemned the attack and stated that efforts have been increased to identify and apprehend the suspect captured in the video. They assured that the suspect would be prosecuted to face the repercussions of his actions.
The statement highlighted, “The Ghana Police Service has started a manhunt for a man caught on a viral video assaulting a suspect. The Service firmly condemns this act and has intensified its efforts to arrest the suspect and ensure he is brought to justice.”
Additionally, the police are investigating the circumstances of the incident to ensure all individuals involved are held accountable under the law.
On Wednesday, SaharaReporters disclosed that the Ghana Police had announced the arrest of Adjei, also known as Apostle Daniel JY Adjei, by its Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team. Adjei was filmed making derogatory statements about Prophet Muhammad.
Furthermore, the police arrested a 35-year-old Imam, Masud Abdullah, for a video in which he advocated violence against those who insult or speak negatively about Prophet Muhammad. The Imam allegedly made these remarks during a sermon at a mosque in Ntensere, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
This situation unfolds amid increasing concerns over the potential for religious sermons and social media platforms to incite violence or encourage public attacks. The police are continuing investigations into both cases and have committed to processing the suspects according to legal procedures.
