Lionel Messi’s emotional return on Wednesday after the passing of his father wasn’t enough to keep Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup. The team was eliminated following a 3-2 defeat against Mexico’s Leon.
Messi, who flew back to Florida from Argentina after attending Jorge, his father’s, funeral, entered the game at half-time to a massive ovation. Jorge, also Messi’s agent, had passed away at 68.
Earlier in the day, Messi shared a heartfelt tribute to his father on social media, expressing uncertainty about his future in football. “I don’t know what I’ll do without you. I have serious doubts about continuing football much longer,” he confessed.
Despite Miami leading 1-0, Leon’s comeback, led by two goals from Colombian Daniel Arcila, secured their spot as the first team in the quarter-finals of the tournament featuring MLS and LigaMx clubs.
Although absent during Miami’s loss to Monterrey, Messi offered himself for the crucial group match. Yannick Bright, one of Miami’s scorers, described Messi’s return as “incredible,” emphasizing the team’s support for their captain.
Brazilian teammate Casemiro remarked on Messi’s dedication, considering the personal challenges he faced, noting he is “an example for all of us.”
Leon coach Javier Gandolfi praised Messi for his resilience and unique character during trying times.
This marks the first instance since 2023 that Miami exited the Leagues Cup in its initial phase. Messi had helped Miami secure the trophy that year alongside Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. In 2025, Miami reached the final but succumbed to a 3-0 loss against Seattle Sounders, a match infamous for a post-game brawl leading to Luis Suarez’s suspension from this year’s tournament.
