According to the United Nations, around 50 million dollars were paid as ransom in late 2025 for a hostage release in Mali. This sum helped fund militants associated with Al-Qaeda and supported their progress throughout West Africa.

According to a recent UN report, most of these funds were allocated to fighters in the Sahel region. Portions also extended to Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in the Arabian Peninsula and the central leadership of the group.

Although the report does not disclose the hostage’s identity or identify who paid the ransom, regional sources imply that it was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. These sources further suggest that an Emirati citizen and two other foreign hostages were freed as a result of this transaction. While there has been no official comment from the UAE regarding this incident, they have reiterated their commitment to fighting extremism and terrorism.

The United Nations emphasizes that kidnappings are used by militants both to generate funding and as a strategy to weaken public trust in government authorities. Additionally, it reports that the Mali-based JNIM coalition currently consists of 7,000 to 8,000 fighters throughout the Sahel region, with half located in Mali.

The report highlights that ransom money is allowing militants to acquire weapons, sustain their activities, and expand their insurgency in the region.

Since 2012, Mali has been grappling with a serious security crisis fueled by violence from groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, along with local criminal organizations and separatist movements. The country experienced military coups in 2020 and 2021 that resulted in military rule. This regime took control promising to restore security—an assurance that remains unfulfilled.
