Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that he will not seek the presidency again if he fails to win the 2027 election.
The former Vice President made the declaration during a Hausa-language interview on Wednesday, putting an end to speculation about a possible 2031 presidential bid.
Asked whether he would return to the presidential race if he lost in 2027, Atiku gave a firm response.
“No, I have said it before, right from this election, I will not contest again,” he said.
Atiku Urges Nigerians to Vote
Atiku also called on Nigerians who have Permanent Voter Cards to participate actively in the 2027 election.
He urged voters not only to cast their ballots but also to remain at their polling units and ensure that the votes are properly counted.
According to him, active participation in the electoral process is essential if Nigerians want to influence the direction of the country.
He appealed to voters to exercise their franchise for the sake of their families and future generations.
‘I Am Healthy and Fit to Lead’
The ADC candidate also addressed questions about his physical fitness and ability to govern Nigeria.
Atiku dismissed concerns about his health, insisting that he remains fit and capable of serving as president.
“No doctor has declared that I am unfit in terms of health. I know my body, I know I am healthy, and I do not have a single defect,” he said.
2027 Could Be Atiku’s Final Presidential Contest
Atiku has contested the Nigerian presidency several times over the years, making the latest declaration particularly significant.
The ADC Vanguard described his decision as an important moment in his long political career, noting that the 2027 election could be his final opportunity to seek the presidency.
The group said Atiku’s political journey has spanned much of Nigeria’s current democratic era, during which he has contested, lost and returned to the presidential race.
It argued that the 2027 election could therefore represent the final chapter of his presidential ambitions.
With the 2027 contest approaching, Atiku’s declaration is likely to add further significance to his campaign as opposition parties seek to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
