Algerian police have announced the seizure of about 33kg of cocaine and more than 10 million capsules of pregabalin in a major operation targeting an international drug trafficking network.
Police released footage on Thursday showing the results of the operation, which investigators said involved the movement of illegal drug consignments from southern Algeria to several cities in the north.
International Network Uncovered
According to the authorities, the investigation uncovered an international trafficking network based in western Algeria.
The operation, which began in January, reportedly led investigators to suspected drug dealers in Morocco, while other alleged members of the network were believed to be operating from Dubai and France.
Police said 25 suspects have been arrested, while another 25 people, including nationals of Algeria, Morocco and the Netherlands, remain at large.
Millions of Pregabalin Capsules Seized
In addition to the cocaine, investigators recovered more than 10 million pregabalin capsules.
Pregabalin is commonly prescribed to treat conditions including epilepsy and nerve pain, but authorities say its misuse has increased because of its euphoric effects.
The large seizure highlights growing concerns over the trafficking and illicit use of pharmaceutical drugs alongside traditional narcotics.
Investigation Continues
Algerian authorities said investigations are continuing as they work to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects and determine the full extent of the network’s operations.
The latest operation comes shortly after Spanish authorities announced the dismantling of another suspected trafficking network operating between Spain and Algeria, highlighting continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt drug routes across the Mediterranean.
