Manchester United suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, making a disastrous start to their Premier League campaign.
Hull, back in the top flight for the first time since 2017, produced an energetic performance despite being without 10 players through injury.
Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi was among Hull’s standout performers, scoring as the hosts stunned United at the MKM Stadium.
Hull Shock United
United were expected to begin the season strongly after finishing third last campaign and setting their sights on challenging champions Arsenal.
Instead, they struggled throughout the match and were unable to match Hull’s intensity.
The defeat raised early questions over United’s ability to mount a serious title challenge under manager Michael Carrick, who has now taken permanent charge after helping revive the team during his interim spell last season.
Former England captain and BBC pundit Alan Shearer summed up United’s performance bluntly.
“Man United have been shocking, no hunger, they’ve been terrible,” Shearer said.
New Signings Struggle
United’s new midfield recruits Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos endured difficult debuts after arriving from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively.
The midfield struggled to impose itself as Hull repeatedly threatened United and capitalised on their defensive weaknesses.
Carrick had previously dismissed suggestions that United had been handed an easy opening to the season, with an away trip to Hull followed by a home fixture against another promoted side, Ipswich.
The defeat, however, highlighted the difficulties facing his team.
Pressure Mounts on Carrick
Carrick’s calm leadership was credited with helping United recover during his interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s turbulent tenure.
His appointment as permanent manager has brought greater expectations, with the club targeting its first English league title since 2013.
Carrick has already called for further reinforcements, and United have reportedly agreed a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
After such a poor opening performance, the United boss is likely to demand further additions as he attempts to strengthen the squad.
Hull’s victory also underlined their rapid rise. The club became the first team since Blackpool in 2010 to finish sixth in the Championship and gain promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.
For United, however, the result represents an early warning that the road back to the top of English football could be far more difficult than expected.
