Pope Leo Appeals for More Efforts as Ebola Crisis Escalates in DR Congo

Pope Leo XIV has called on the international community to step up efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), warning that the deadly disease is claiming lives and requires urgent action.

Speaking after his Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the Pope said he was keeping the people of DR Congo in his prayers, particularly those affected by the spread of Ebola.

“In my prayers I often remember the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially because of the spread of the Ebola epidemic, which unfortunately is causing many victims,” Pope Leo said.

He urged the international community to work closely with local communities to strengthen efforts to contain the outbreak and save lives.

“I encourage a response from the international community that also involves local communities in efforts to save many human lives,” he added.

Ebola Hits Vulnerable Communities

The outbreak is affecting areas of DR Congo where healthcare infrastructure remains limited and state presence is weak.

The situation is further complicated by years of violence and the activities of armed groups in parts of the country, making it more difficult for health workers to reach vulnerable communities and deliver essential medical assistance.

The Pope’s appeal comes as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the disease and prevent further transmission.

Pope Expresses Sympathy for Central African Republic

During his address, Pope Leo also expressed solidarity with people in the Central African Republic following a deadly mining disaster in Zamboye.

A landslide at a gold mine near the border with Cameroon reportedly killed dozens of people, while others remained missing and were feared trapped beneath the rubble.

“May the Lord welcome all those who lost their lives, and support efforts to guarantee the safety and legality of mining sites,” the Pope said.

Remembering Italy Earthquake Victims

Pope Leo also remembered victims of the devastating earthquake that struck central Italy a decade ago.

The earthquake, which killed around 300 people and caused widespread destruction, heavily affected the town of Amatrice and surrounding communities.

The Pope prayed for those who died, their families and communities that continue to remember the tragedy.

His remarks highlighted the need for international solidarity in responding to public-health emergencies, humanitarian crises and disasters affecting vulnerable communities around the world.
