Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has said Nigeria’s political and developmental trajectory might have been significantly different if former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had survived his illness and completed his tenure in office.

Speaking during an interview on Csuite Cafe, Utomi described Yar’Adua as a committed patriot who genuinely wanted to see Nigeria make progress and achieve sustainable development.

Yar’Adua served as Nigeria’s president from 2007 until his death on May 5, 2010. He was succeeded by his vice president, Goodluck Jonathan, who later became president.

Utomi Recalls His Relationship With Yar’Adua

Reflecting on his relationship with the late president, Utomi disclosed that Yar’Adua once invited him to the Presidential Villa and encouraged him to join his administration as a minister.

According to Utomi, the invitation reflected Yar’Adua’s desire to bring people with expertise and ideas into government and use their knowledge to contribute to national development.

Utomi said his interactions with the former president left him with the impression that Yar’Adua was genuinely concerned about Nigeria’s future and was committed to improving the country.

‘Nigeria Might Have Taken a Different Path’

Utomi suggested that Yar’Adua’s untimely death had implications for the direction of Nigeria’s political and economic development.

He argued that the late president had qualities that could have helped shape a different approach to governance had he remained in office and completed his constitutional tenure.

Yar’Adua’s administration was widely associated with initiatives including the Niger Delta amnesty programme, electoral reforms and efforts to strengthen accountability in government.

His government also introduced the Seven-Point Agenda, which focused on areas such as power, transportation, food security, land reform, security and human capital development.

However, his prolonged illness and eventual death created uncertainty within the administration and led to a major political transition.

A Legacy That Continues to Generate Debate

Yar’Adua’s presidency remains a subject of discussion among political analysts, particularly because his administration was cut short by illness.

For Utomi, the late president should be remembered not simply as a former occupant of Nigeria’s highest political office, but as a leader who demonstrated a genuine commitment to the country’s development.

The professor’s comments have renewed conversations about what Nigeria might have achieved under Yar’Adua had his health allowed him to complete his tenure.

More than a decade after his death, Yar’Adua’s political legacy continues to attract debate over leadership, democratic governance, accountability and Nigeria’s search for sustainable development.
