No fewer than seven men have been killed, while two others sustained serious injuries in a multiple road crash along the Ibafo–Lagos corridor at Kara, Ibafo, Ogun State.
The fatal crash occurred at about 12:03 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, and involved three vehicles: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC, a white MACK trailer, and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary findings identified speed violation as the probable cause, subject to further investigation.
According to Odunsi, nine people, all male, were involved in the crash. Seven died in the accident, while two others sustained injuries.
“The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Sector Command, has confirmed a fatal multiple road traffic crash that occurred at about 0003hrs on Monday, 24 August 2026, along the Ibafo–Lagos corridor at Kara, Ibafo,” he said.
He explained that the FRSC Ibafo Outpost Command received information about the crash at approximately 4:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 4:09 a.m., representing a response time of about five minutes.
The bodies of the deceased were evacuated from the scene by the Ogun State Ambulance Service, while the injured victims were taken for medical treatment.
The FRSC classified the incident as a fatal multiple road traffic crash, with speed violation identified as the probable cause.
Vehicles Handed Over to Police
Following the operation, the crashed vehicles were handed over to the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Nigeria Police Force, Ibafo, for further investigation and necessary action.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
Odunsi also quoted the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, as urging motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise greater caution on the roads.
He advised drivers to avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and remain vigilant while driving.
The Sector Commander also warned motorists to take extra precautions when travelling at night, noting that reduced visibility and driver fatigue can increase the risk of serious road crashes.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety along the busy Ibafo–Lagos corridor, where heavy commercial vehicles and other motorists frequently share the route.
