China Faces Growing Concern as Teens Use Drugs to Escape Reality

Chinese teenagers are increasingly turning to prescription drugs as a way to cope with mounting academic pressures and family conflicts. Many young people are using these medicines as an avenue to momentarily escape from reality.

One such case involves a teenager referred to as Xiaomei, who, according to a BBC report, started misusing cough medication at 14 after being advised by an older peer that it would help her relax. Her experimentation expanded to other prescription drugs sourced from online platforms and social media chat groups.

For nearly two years, Xiaomei consumed medications without prescriptions, primarily when she felt stressed due to heavy schoolwork, poor test scores, or disputes with her parents.

“I was running away from reality,” she explained to the BBC.

The broadcaster discovered similar stories from numerous Chinese teenagers in online chat rooms. Some adolescents admitted to consuming large quantities of medication deliberately to induce feelings of dizziness, numbness, or hallucinations.

Experts believe the immense pressure faced by Chinese students, who often spend extensive hours studying, might lead to anxiety and unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Although official data is sparse, making it challenging to gauge the magnitude of this issue, the Chinese government has enacted stricter regulations on certain medications following concerns about their misuse among the youth.

Despite these restrictions, the BBC found evidence that some medicines are still accessible through online channels, demonstrating ongoing difficulties in preventing teens from obtaining prescription drugs without proper medical advice.

This alarming trend has raised questions about adolescent mental health, the risks posed by online drug markets, and the urgent need for robust safeguards against drug misuse among youngsters.
