A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Okai Austin, has urged Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to address comments made by Samuel Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council. Okai labeled these remarks as divisive and potentially escalating political tensions.
Okai, a human rights advocate, issued this call in Abuja on Wednesday after a video went viral, allegedly showing Shekwolo threatening to target critics on social media. Furthermore, Shekwolo is accused of instructing residents who do not support the ruling All Progressives Congress to leave the area council.
Okai condemned the comments as unnecessary, warning that inflammatory statements by officials could heighten tensions and lead to violence. He emphasized that the Federal Capital Territory belongs to all Nigerians and should be a space for peaceful political expression.
He urged Shekwolo to show restraint and promote tolerance, inclusiveness, and peaceful coexistence among Kuje residents, irrespective of their political views.
Okai also called on Wike and other relevant authorities to examine the remarks attributed to Shekwolo and take action before the situation worsens. He encouraged political leaders to resolve disagreements through dialogue and responsible conduct, highlighting the obligation of public officials to maintain peace and honor diverse political perspectives.
