Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from Argentina duty, ending a 21-year relationship with the national team that began with a teenager being sent off on debut and concluded with the same player becoming a World Cup-winning captain.

Messi, now 39, departs with two major records: 207 appearances and 125 goals, making him both Argentina’s most-capped player and its leading scorer.

But statistics cannot fully describe what Messi has meant to Argentine football.

A Career Built Through Setbacks

When Messi first appeared for Argentina in 2005, few could have predicted the journey ahead.

His debut against Hungary lasted only moments after he was shown a red card following a clash with defender Vilmos Vanczak.

The years that followed were considerably more successful, but international glory remained frustratingly out of reach.

Messi reached major finals with Argentina but repeatedly returned home without a trophy. Each disappointment brought another wave of criticism, with some supporters questioning whether the Barcelona star could reproduce his club success on the international stage.

The frustration reached a breaking point after the 2016 Copa América final.

Argentina lost to Chile on penalties, with Messi missing his spot-kick during the shootout. He subsequently announced that he was retiring from international football.

It was not the end.

Argentina’s Long-Awaited Redemption

Messi eventually returned, and the decision changed the course of his international legacy.

Argentina won the Copa América in 2021, giving Messi his first major senior international trophy.

Then came Qatar.

The 2022 World Cup provided the stage for Messi to complete the achievement that had defined so much of his career.

Argentina survived a thrilling final against France and eventually prevailed in the penalty shootout. Messi lifted the World Cup, ending years of debate about whether his international career would ever match the extraordinary success he had enjoyed at club level.

From that moment, his place in Argentine football history was secure.

Why Messi Chose to Walk Away

The decision to retire comes after another difficult period.

Messi lost his father, Jorge Messi, in August after a long illness. He said he had already prepared his retirement message on July 21, two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

The emotional impact of his father’s death appears to have reinforced a decision Messi had already been considering.

His message was simple: after giving everything to Argentina, he believes there is nothing more he can offer.

That decision also creates an opportunity for the next generation of Argentine players.

His Story With Argentina Is Complete

Messi will not immediately disappear from professional football.

The forward is expected to remain with Inter Miami, where his contract runs until the end of the 2028 season.

His final international record is extraordinary.

He scored 125 times for Argentina and represented the country on 207 occasions. During the 2026 World Cup, he contributed eight goals and four assists, while reaching 12 World Cup assists overall.

Those numbers reinforce his statistical importance, but his emotional impact may be even greater.

For years, Messi was the player expected to rescue Argentina. He endured criticism, heartbreak and the pressure of comparison with Diego Maradona and other Argentine icons.

Eventually, he delivered the one prize that had eluded him.

Now he can leave the national team knowing he fulfilled that dream.

“Thank you for all the love over the past 20 years,” Messi said, reflecting on his relationship with Argentina’s supporters.

The stadiums will eventually hear another generation of Argentine stars. But the era of Messi in the Argentina shirt will be remembered for decades.

He arrived as a teenage prodigy.

He leaves as a world champion and national record-holder.

And perhaps most importantly, he leaves having finally given Argentina the moment its supporters had waited years to celebrate.
