Iran has accused the United States of committing a “war crime” after four people, including a child, were reportedly killed during a wedding celebration in southern Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei condemned the incident, saying civilians had been killed during a US military operation.
The Iranian Red Crescent said shrapnel from a US missile struck a house where the wedding celebration was taking place. The organisation initially reported five deaths before revising the figure to four.
The United States has denied deliberately targeting civilians. The US military said it was aware of reports concerning the incident but maintained that American forces do not target civilian populations.
According to the US military, its latest strikes were directed at Iranian military targets and came in response to what it described as recent attempted attacks by Iran.
The incident comes amid a sharp escalation between Washington and Tehran. Iran launched missiles and drones at American targets in several parts of the Middle East, including locations in Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq and Bahrain.
The widening attacks have raised fears that the conflict could spread further across the region, with both sides continuing to exchange fire.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said two oil tankers were struck by mines while attempting to pass through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The latest developments have increased concerns over civilian casualties, regional security and the possible disruption of international energy supplies as the confrontation between Iran and the US intensifies.
