The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has conveyed his belief that the economic hardships and security issues facing Nigerians will not necessarily hinder President Bola Tinubu’s chances of re-election in 2027.

Wike made this assertion on Wednesday during a media engagement with selected journalists in Abuja, where he elaborated on the factors he perceives as influencing voting behavior in Nigeria.

The former governor of Rivers State recognized that hunger and insecurity are likely to persist as significant concerns in the upcoming general election. Nevertheless, he contended that the political realities must be taken into account when evaluating how Nigerians make their electoral choices.

Wike noted that numerous voters maintain strong connections with political leaders at various levels, including within their families, communities, local governments, and wards.

He posited that these connections can significantly affect voting decisions, particularly since some Nigerians rely on political leaders for support with food and other essential needs.

Wike emphasized that this form of political reliance distinguishes the Nigerian electoral landscape from that of countries where voters may be less dependent on political officeholders or networks.

“There is no election in Nigeria where the issues of hunger and insecurity will not arise,” he stated.

The FCT minister also recalled that similar apprehensions regarding insecurity and economic difficulties were voiced during elections conducted under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

His remarks come in the context of increasing political activity in anticipation of the 2027 presidential election, with economic conditions, security, and the performance of the current administration expected to play a significant role in political campaigns and voter discussions.

While Wike expressed optimism about Tinubu’s prospects, he acknowledged that the ultimate outcome of the election will be contingent upon voters and the political dynamics that unfold prior to the polls.
