At least 10 people have reportedly died following a collision involving two high-speed trains in Spain, according to a regional official cited in initial reports.

The crash prompted the suspension of high-speed rail services connecting Madrid with the southern Andalusia region, according to Spain’s railway infrastructure operator, Adif.

Reuters reported on Wednesday, October 28, that the collision involved two trains travelling on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line. However, the operator did not immediately provide details about casualties or the cause of the incident.

Collision Reported Near Toledo

According to Spanish media reports cited in initial coverage, the collision occurred shortly after 9 a.m. local time near the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda in Toledo province.

The trains were reportedly an AVE service travelling from Madrid towards Seville and an Iryo train travelling in the opposite direction.

Spanish newspaper El País reported that witnesses described injuries at the scene and the arrival of emergency medical teams. Two rail cars were also reported to have left the tracks and fallen down an embankment.

The precise circumstances surrounding the collision have not yet been established.

Rail Services Suspended

Adif announced that high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia had been suspended following the collision.

The disruption affects an important rail corridor connecting the Spanish capital with destinations in the country’s south.

Emergency personnel were reported to have arrived at the scene, although comprehensive details about rescue operations and the number of injured passengers were not immediately available in the reports reviewed.

Death Toll Awaiting Further Confirmation

A regional official was cited in the supplied report as saying that at least 10 people had died. However, the death toll could not be independently confirmed from the latest Reuters report reviewed.

Authorities are expected to provide further information as emergency operations continue and more details become available.

The cause of the collision also remains unclear. No official conclusion about responsibility or the circumstances leading to the crash has been established in the reports reviewed.

This is a developing story. OBASANJONEWS24.NG will update this report as verified information becomes available.
