Former SGF Babachir Lawal has formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), months after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lawal was received by NDC leaders in Abuja on Tuesday following a meeting with the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.
He subsequently announced his support for the NDC’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for the 2027 election.
Why Lawal Left ADC
Lawal resigned from the ADC on June 1 after Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
He had previously criticised the circumstances surrounding the party’s presidential primary and said he could not continue with the political arrangement.
His departure came after months of involvement in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 election.
Lawal Backs NDC Ticket
After joining the NDC, Lawal said his decision was influenced by his concerns about insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease in Nigeria.
He said he believed the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket offered a platform through which he could contribute to what he described as a better future for the country.
Lawal said he expected supporters of the ticket to celebrate on May 29, 2027, although the outcome of the election remains for Nigerian voters to determine.
NDC Gives Lawal New Role
Dickson welcomed Lawal into the party and described him as an experienced political organiser with extensive knowledge of Nigeria’s political environment.
According to reports from the unveiling, Dickson said Lawal would take on a leadership role in the party’s activities and campaigns in the North-East.
Lawal had previously supported Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, when Obi contested on the Labour Party platform.
His latest move represents another change in his political alignment as parties prepare for the 2027 general election.
