Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social commentator Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has spoken about his decision to accept the sexuality of his two adult daughters.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, Charly Boy said his daughters’ personal decisions are ultimately theirs to make, adding that his priority is their happiness and wellbeing.
The entertainer explained that his younger daughter came out as a lesbian several years ago, while his older daughter disclosed her sexuality more recently.
According to him, accepting the news was initially difficult, particularly because his older daughter had already established a family and has children.
‘I want my daughters to be happy’
Charly Boy said he eventually chose to support his daughters because he believes parents cannot control the lives of their adult children.
He explained that his older daughter is a mother and grandmother, making her personal decisions her own.
He said his main concern was that his children should be happy and responsible for their own lives.
The entertainer also said he does not want unnecessary conflict with his children and prefers to maintain a relationship built around love and mutual respect.
Charly Boy explains his parenting approach
The veteran entertainer said his experience had made him reconsider what it means to be a supportive parent.
He explained that rather than adopting what he described as a rigid approach, he chose to adapt to his children’s individual choices.
Charly Boy said his children are adults who are expected to stand on their own feet, adding that he believes love should remain at the center of their relationship.
He also emphasized that his daughters’ decisions should not be viewed as something requiring his permission or approval.
