The ongoing conflict with Iran has cost the United States approximately $37.5 billion, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as the Pentagon seeks additional billions of dollars to sustain military operations.

Hegseth disclosed the figure during testimony before U.S. lawmakers, where he defended the administration’s request for further funding amid growing concerns over the rising financial burden of the conflict.

The Pentagon’s estimate covers military operations, including personnel costs, equipment, logistics, and other expenses associated with the campaign. Officials have warned that without additional funding, some military activities and long-term readiness programmes could face pressure.

The request for more money has triggered debate in Congress, with lawmakers questioning the scale of spending, the duration of the conflict, and the broader impact on U.S. taxpayers. Some officials have demanded greater transparency over the costs and objectives of the military operation.

The conflict has also raised concerns beyond the battlefield, including possible effects on global energy markets, regional security, and international trade due to tensions around the Middle East and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Hegseth and Pentagon officials argue that continued funding is necessary to protect U.S. forces, maintain military capabilities, and respond to threats from Iran. However, critics warn that prolonged military engagement could lead to even higher costs and deeper geopolitical instability.

As fighting continues, the financial impact of the conflict is expected to remain a major political issue in Washington, with lawmakers weighing the balance between national security priorities and concerns over government spending.
